Nikon announces two new 18–55mm DX zoom lenses for great everyday photography (05.01.2016)
Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 5th January 2016: Nikon updates its portfolio of NIKKOR lenses with two new DX-format zooms that capture great everyday photos and movies. With their compact build and a zoom range that runs from wide-angle to normal, the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR and the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G are excellent walk-around lenses for photographers using Nikon’s entry-level DSLRs.
From city shots and landscapes to portraits and family events, these multipurpose lenses are the smart way to faithfully capture day-to-day moments. Both lenses cover the popular focal length range of 18–55mm and offer a maximum aperture of f/3.5–5.6. These are also the first NIKKOR lenses to employ Nikon’s new Stepping Motor, which focuses fast and is ideal for shooting movies. The AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm VR features Nikon’s Vibration Reduction technology for clear, blur-free images, especially in low light, and both lenses boast a retractable lens mechanism for superior portability. Consistently strong performers, these 18–55m lenses offer starting DSLR photographers a great balance of image quality, versatility and affordability (especially when purchased in a kit).
Zurab Kiknadze, Product Manager, Lenses, Accessories & Software, Nikon Europe, says: “We’re happy to announce these two new additions to Nikon’s 18–55mm lens portfolio. Both lenses continue our policy of ensuring that newcomers to the Nikon DSLR system get the best possible introduction to the world of NIKKOR optics. We’ve streamlined the lens design to keep weight low and improve portability, but the big change is the inclusion of Nikon’s Stepping Motor: autofocus is now noticeably faster and quieter than before. Whether you use these 18–55m lenses to shoot movies or take photos, you’re getting great image quality plus exceptional convenience and reliability straight out of the box.”
New Stepping Motor - smooth, fast autofocus
Thanks to Nikon’s Stepping Motor, both these new lenses focus quietly and are faster than ever. When zooming in to capture a photo, subjects come into focus instantly and with absolute precision. When shooting video footage, the motor allows you to smoothly shift focus from subject to subject with practically no drive noise. Footage shot won’t be ruined by any tiny, but still audible, sounds of the lens focusing.
Simplified control, easy portability
Designed to offer first-time users a more intuitive way to shoot, both of these 18-55mm NIKKORs are perfect for anyone new to D-SLR photography. The compact and lightweight build makes both lenses easy to handle. These are also the first Nikon lenses to allow users to switch between Auto Focus and Manual Focus, or turn VR on and off, using the camera menu*. With no switches on the lens barrel itself, there’s no chance of accidentally changing settings when the time comes to take the shot. The AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR lens body weighs just 205 g, while the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G weighs 195 g. Both lenses retract when not in use, making them exceptionally easy to pack into your bag, or keep attached to the camera on that weekend trip away.
Nikon quality images
These lenses are specifically designed to make the most of the high pixel count and advanced image sensor of a Nikon DX-format DSLR. Two aspherical elements in each lens minimise spherical aberration and other forms of distortion for high-resolution photos and movies with vivid colour, striking contrast, and crisp detail.
* Only works with compatible cameras: D5500/D5300/D3300. Compatible cameras may require a firmware update.
