PHOTO CAMERA AS A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT OF DENTISTS (03.12.2015)
One piece of equipment of today’s orthodontic centres is a digital photo camera.
The process of treatment starting from the problem description, treatment process itself to the results is captured on the photos and maintained in the data bases.
Nikon’s D3000 series is widely used and acknowledged by the dentists. This camera is originally meant for photography enthusiasts but it also fits perfectly into the professional hands of medical workers.
At the moment, the cheapest and most suitable choice is Nikon D3300. Its 24.2 megapixel resolution sensor assures a detailed snapshots with little noise and natural colours. This camera can be adjusted according to the light used in a room and it ensures that the precise colours are captured on the photo. The sensor’s good dynamic range is often able to find the colour changes and micro cracks in the tooth enamel that the human eye is not able to detect.
Based on the specifics of the dentists’ work, the weight and ergonomics of the camera are very important. Since they often work with the camera using just one hand, the camera has be light weight and fit into the hand conveniently and firmly. Together with the battery, Nikon D3300 only weighs 460 grams. The rubber hand grip ensures that it is comfortable to hold this camera and it does not slip.
The most suitable lens for the dentists is Nikkor 85mm DX Micro f/3.5. It has the suitable zoom, light weight (355g) and optical power which enable close-ups from the teeth and oral cavity and at the same time, this lens is good for taking portrait shots.
The most difficult thing is to direct the light into the oral cavity. The use of ordinary flash lights is not even thinkable here because the light has to be directed from as close of the lens as possible. Here, Nikon also offers a solution. Wireless macro lens system R1C1 is the perfect kit because the flash lights are situated on the sides of the lens and together with the adapter; it is possible to light a very narrow area just in front of the lens’ front lens. The milky surfaces of the adapter’s reflectors and diffusers do not create sharp reflections on the teeth and gums – the mouth is lighted with diffused light.
