Designed for life: Nikon’s new robust cameras and two new easy to use COOLPIX models (29.01.2013)

Nikon Europe today unveils four new additions to its range of COOLPIX cameras, including an expert in underwater photography: the robust AW110 outdoor camera, which can be taken to a depth of 18 meters and offers Wi-Fi for sharing experiences as they happen. Meanwhile, the waterproof, shockproof and dustproof 10-megapixel S31 is a sturdy yet simple camera that the whole family can use. Finally, two new L series cameras, the L27 and L28, make capturing quality images and movies effortless.

The rugged AW110 has been designed with the extreme sports fan or newly qualified diver in mind. You could strap it to a scuba tank and explore beneath the waves to a depth of 18m, the standard diving depth for those with an Open Water Diver qualification. It also offers instant uploading to a compatible smart device via Wi-Fi so that subaquatic adventures can easily be shared with friends and family. For those who want a robust body on a more moderate scale, the S31 can go down to 5m underwater, will withstand knocks or dust, but is so simple to operate that everyone from grandparents to kids will enjoy using it. If a hassle free point and shoot camera is what you want, the L27 and L28 both have smart auto features so you can focus on the important things in life.”

The AW110 – Ready to capture the great outdoors

Designed to capture and share all the action, the AW110 is just as prepared for adventure as you are. Whether it's in your hand, mounted to a surfboard, clipped on a backpack or attached to a scuba tank, every twist, splash, dive and crash can be recorded in crisp pictures or Full HD (1080p) movies. A 16-megapixel back illuminated CMOS sensor, NIKKOR wide-angle 5x zoom lens and a 7.5-cm (3-in) 614k-dot OLED monitor comes in a tough compact body that is dustproof, waterproof to depths of 18m, shockproof from heights of up to 2m and freeze-proof for temperatures down to -10°C.

Friends and family can be kept up to date with all your latest escapades, thanks to built-in Wi-Fi which transfers pictures and videos directly to a smart device, for easy uploading. In keeping with the needs of an adventurous photographer, a raft of features ensures the AW110 is optimized for the great outdoors. GPS enables geotagging of images, so you can easily track and tell others where your pictures were taken, whilst an electronic compass and a world map help you to orientate yourself and plot a route. An altimeter records the exact altitude at which you take a shot (range: -300 m to 4,500 m) and a hydro-barometer measures underwater depth (range: 0 to -20 m).

Designed to make sure you can capture the action when you are right in the middle of it, rather than standing on the sidelines, a handy Action Control feature means you can adjust camera settings by swinging the camera from side to side, so that operation is easy even when underwater or wearing thick gloves.

As is typical of a Nikon camera, the image quality offered by the AW110 is second to none. The highly sensitive 16-megapixel CMOS sensor and dedicated low light modes combine to deliver stunning results in bright sunlight, at night or underwater. High ISO (up to 3200) light sensitivity reduces the risk of blurred images with fast-moving subjects or in low light, while Best Shot Selector (BSS) automatically selects the sharpest of up to 10 sequential shots. Ultimately, there is no better camera for capturing outdoor pursuits or adventurous exploits – whether in winter, spring, summer or fall.

The S31 – Welcome to the family

Sturdy, simple and fun, the 10-megapixel S31 can be used by the whole family. With large buttons, clear menus, a NIKKOR 3x optical zoom lens, 6.7-cm (2.7-in) LCD screen, HD video recording and fun in-camera filters, anyone can take great shots and movies with the confidence that this camera can withstand knocks and be taken practically anywhere. Waterproof down to a depth of 5 meters, shockproof from up to 1.2 meters height and dustproof, it is built for active use at home and on holiday, and encourages capturing pictures from new places, such as in the pool or on the beach.

A symmetric body design ensures the S31 is easy to handle and fits comfortably in any pair of hands. The flash is in the centre, while large, dedicated one-touch buttons for taking a photo or filming a crisp 720p movie are on either side of the camera, to avoid little fingers getting in the way of a great shot. Clear menus with bold, colourful icons make it simple to navigate through functions, even for children. Automatic anti-blur technology ensures sharp shots of the fastest-moving friends or relatives, and once the perfect picture has been captured, fun in-camera filters can add an extra special touch, such as a Fisheye effect or Selective Colour.

The COOLPIX S31 comes in five colours: yellow, pink, blue, white and brown, and will be available at a RRP of 115 Eur.

The L27 - Making memories last

Attractive, sturdy and easy to use, the 16-megapixel L27 is clever with photos and movies - so you don’t have to be. Simple controls and smart automatic functions deliver steady images, and ensure you capture portraits with smiling faces and open eyes.

A NIKKOR wide-angle 5x optical zoom lens (26–130mm) captures everythingfrom group shots to close-ups with superb precision and sharp resolution. When you want to remember even more of the moment, crisp HD (720p) video recording is available at the touch of a button, and photos and movies are played back just as you remember them on a quality 6.7-cm (2.7-in.) LCD monitor.

Easy Auto Mode optimizes all camera settings depending on what light you are in, ensuring your images are always impressive. Built-in Motion Blur Reduction reduces the effect of camera shake, and the Smart Portrait System includes features such as Smile Timer and Skin Softening, to ensure subjects always look their best. Powered by convenient AA-size batteries, the L27 is perfect for taking anywhere.

The L28 – Focusing on the important things in life

The COOLPIX L28 is another stunningly easy-to-use camera that makes snapping photos and shooting movies a delight. With 20 megapixels, a NIKKOR wide-angle 5x optical zoom lens, a 7.5-cm (3.0-in.) LCD monitor and HD (720p) video recording, it has everything needed to capture the important things in life.

Easy Auto Mode and one-touch video recording keep things simple, while the high megapixel count and sharp NIKKOR 5x optical zoom lens make sure everything is captured perfectly, from a close-up photo of a new addition to the family, to a movie of the whole family at play. Photos look great when played back on the large LCD monitor, and are so crisp they make excellent enlargements worthy of hanging on the wall. The L28 is powered by convenient AA batteries.
